Tropical Cyclone Zena Brings Heavy Rainfall to Recovering Fiji

HH 040716

PDC Global Hazards Atlas, centered on the South Pacific, displaying PDC Active Hazards, Tropical Cyclone Positions and Segments, and rainfall accumulation over the past three days.

It has been barely six weeks since Tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall in the Fiji islands as a Category 5 cyclone, affecting an estimated 350,000 people, and another tropical cyclone posed a threat to the recovering island nation this week (ReliefWeb/UN OCHA, ReliefWeb/IFRC).

Forming on April 5, Tropical Cyclone Zena passed south of the island of Kadavu on April 6 as a Category 2 cyclone, bringing heavy rains and gusty winds to parts of the country previously impacted by TC Winston (ReliefWeb/UN OCHA). As TC Zena approached the islands, hazardous conditions led to delays in ongoing recovery activities related to Winston and assistance to some affected communities (ReliefWeb/CARE).

Though weather conditions have improved in most areas and flood waters are starting to subside (as of April 7), food security concerns have increased due to flooding in areas where agricultural rehabilitation has been taking place (ReliefWeb/UN OCHA). According to reports, replacement seeds and seedlings planted following impact by TC Winston were badly affected or washed away by this week’s flooding (ReliefWeb/UN OCHA).

This Week in Hazards:

  • Heavy rainfall  and flooding prompted the Secretariat of Risk Management in Ecuador to declare an “Orange Alert” for 19 of the country’s 24 provinces on April 2 (PAHO, ANDINA, ECHO). In Ecuador, alerts are represented by the colors yellow, orange, and red, and of these 19 provinces, 17 were on “Yellow Alert” since November (SNGR).
  • Since the start of the week, Vanuatu has experienced at least three “significant earthquakes” ranging from 6.7 to 6.9M (one of them initially reported as 7.2), with the most recent having struck on April 7 (USGS). According to media reports, there were no immediate reports of damage following the quakes, nor did they generate lasting tsunami threats (Reuters, ReliefWeb).
  • As of April 7, more than 15,000 people in the Northern province of Sri Lanka have been affected by drought conditions caused by ongoing dry weather and high temperatures (DMC).
