Severe Weather Damages Houses, Crops in Myanmar

HH 042816

PDC Global Hazards Atlas, centered on Myanmar, displaying accumulated rainfall over the past seven days.

Over the past week, nearly 60,000 people have been affected by heavy rain, gale-force winds, and hailstorms that impacted the Mandalay, Sagaing, Pegu, Magwe, and Tenasserim regions, as well as the Shan, Chin, Arakan, and Kachin states, of Myanmar from April 21 to 26 (ReliefWeb, ReliefWeb/UNOCHA). Reports indicate that severe weather conditions have caused several injuries and deaths, as well as damaged thousands of houses (ECHO).

In Mandalay, severe weather conditions (mainly hailstorms) caused the deaths of six people and more than 300 animals, and damaged more than 450 buildings in the towns of Kyaukse and Sintgaing (ReliefWeb). According to reports, hailstorms also damaged more than 12,000 acres of crops in Kyaukse and Myittha (ReliefWeb).

This Week in Hazards:

  • It’s been a year since the 7.8M earthquake, and the major aftershocks that followed, struck Nepal, claiming nearly 9,000 lives, severely damaging critical infrastructure, and leaving a wide range of major social, economic, and environmental challenges in their wake in the densely-populated Kathmandu Valley (PDC). As long-term recovery in Nepal continues, one of the programs being undertaken by the country’s new Reconstruction Authority and its partners will (over the course of a few years) provide over 500,000 low-cost, earthquake-resistant homes to an estimated three million people, ensuring that Nepal in on the way to building back better (UNISDR).
  • As of April 27, more than 82,000 people remain sheltered (in temporary and active shelters) due to flooding in Paraguay (PAHO). According to the most recent report from the Office of the Resident Coordinator of Paraguay, water levels have reduced for the Paraguay and Paraná rivers, but remain at critical levels near the cities of Bahía Negra, Concepción, Alberdi, Asunción and Pilar (ReliefWeb/UNOCHA).
  • Heat wave conditions in India are expected to persist in parts of Bihar and Odisha, as well as isolated areas across the country, for the remainder of the week (NDMA, IMD). As of April 28, reports indicate that the ongoing ‘extreme heat wave’ has caused more than 290 deaths across the country over the past weeks, with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Bihar reported as the most affected states (ECHO, ReliefWeb/Sphere India).
