PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying 3-hour precipitation accumulation…and an area of disturbed weather near the far northwest coast of Australia

There’s an area of disturbed weather in the South Indian Ocean, being referred to as Invest 92S, circled in red above…that now has a high chance of developing

This disturbed area was located about 375 NM north-northeast of Learmonth, Australia, here’s a satellite image – along with what the computer models are showing

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), satellite imagery shows rapidly improving spiral cloud banding, with central convection forming over a well defined low level circulation center.

Microwave imagery depicts deep convective banding on the southern and western peripheries.

Upper level analysis indicates an improving environment with light to moderate 10-20 knot wind shear…and robust outflow.

Sea surface temperatures in the area are favorable for development at 86F degrees (30 degrees celsius).

Weather model guidance suggests development of a tropical cyclone within 24 hours.

The potential for the development of a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours is now high

Here’s Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) tropical cyclone information:

Forecast track map

Headline:

Developing tropical low expected to reach category 2 strength when it crosses the Pilbara coast Saturday morning.

Areas Affected:

Bidyadanga to Mardie and the adjacent inland parts to Marble Bar and Pannawonica.

Details of Tropical Low at 11:00 pm AWST:

The low is gradually strengthening and is forecast to become a tropical cyclone during Friday as it tracks southwards towards the Pilbara coast. It is forecast to reach category 2 intensity when it makes landfall on Saturday morning between Pardoo and Karratha, including near Port Hedland.

Hazards:

GALES may develop in coastal parts between Wallal and Dampier, including Port Hedland and Karratha, during Friday evening or overnight into Saturday morning. If the system tracks further to the east then GALES may develop as far east as Bidyadanga. If the system tracks further west then GALES may extend as far west as Mardie during Saturday.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 150 kilometres per hour may occur near the centre on Saturday morning and afternoon including in the Port Hedland area.

Tides between Pardoo and Karratha are likely to rise above the normal high tide mark with very rough seas and possible flooding of low-lying coastal areas east of the crossing point.

Heavy rainfall associated with the system is likely to develop over the Pilbara and far western Kimberley from Friday and extend further inland as the system continues to track southwards on Saturday. A Flood Watch is current for the Pilbara and a Flood Warning is current for the De Grey River Catchment, see www.bom.gov.au/wa/warnings/ for more details.

Recommended Action:

YELLOW ALERT: People in communities between Pardoo and Whim Creek including Port Hedland and South Hedland need to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone.

BLUE ALERT: People in communities between Bidyadanga and Pardoo including Marble Bar, Sandfire and Pardoo; and between Whim Creek to Mardie including the communities of Point Samson, Wickham, Roebourne, Karratha, Dampier and Pannawonica, need to prepare for cyclonic weather and organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, spare batteries, food and water.

Communities between Bidyadanga and Mardie should listen for the next advice.
