Tropical Cyclone 11P (Winston) remains active in the southwest Pacific…and is on a weakening trend over the open ocean

Here’s a satellite image of this still strong tropical cyclone, what the computer models are showing…and a near real time wind profile (spinning clockwise in the southern hemisphere)

This tropical cyclone is located about 348 NM west of Suva, Fiji

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), satellite imagery depicts a ragged 20 NM eye that has changed little in structure over the last 6-hours.

Sea surface temperatures remain warm, and a strong poleward outflow channel exists, which is helping to maintain the current intensity. However, the equatorward outflow channel is showing signs of weakening due to convergence observed north of the tropical cyclone. In addition, there’s a band of dry air currently being entrained into the system…which will hinder further intensification.

TC Winston should maintain it’s current intensity for the next 12 hours, before weakening significantly due to the disruption of the equatorward exhaust channel, and increased wind shear aloft.

The current movement is nearly stationary, although Winston should soon accelerate. As the system weakens, the dominant steering mechanism will shift the storm westward.

Maximum sustained winds as of the JTWC Warning #38 were 90 knots with gusts of 110 knots

Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall in Fiji on Saturday, killing at least 20 people, and leaving more than 8,000 in shelters. Even worse, officials expect that death toll to rise when they’re finally able to reach outlying islands that were hit hardest by the powerful storm, according to the BBC.

Strong winds and flooding from Winston have caused severe damage across the island nation. A month-long state of disaster has also been declared.

“The death toll from Cyclone Winston continues to rise and reports of widespread damage are coming in from across Fiji,” New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully told NBC News. “It is clear that Fiji faces a major cleanup and recovery operation.”

In a televised address to the nation Sunday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said many people had been left without power, fresh water or communications.

“The damage has been widespread, homes have been destroyed, many low-lying areas have flooded, and many people have been left stunned and confused about what to do,” he said.

He added that the police and military had been brought in to help with rescue operations and the general cleanup, and that government agencies were working overtime to clear roads and restore power.

Aerial footage of outlying islands taken by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and posted on the Fiji government’s official website, showed entire villages flattened and flooded.

“The Fijians are desperately trying to repair severed lines of communication, but they hold grave fears that the news waiting for them will be dire,” said Raijeli Nicole, Pacific regional director of aid group Oxfam.

“Given the intensity of the storm and the images we have seen so far, there are strong concerns that the death toll won’t stop climbing today and that hundreds of people will have seen their homes and livelihoods completely destroyed.”

The island nation has a population of about 900,000 people.
