Tropical Cyclone Activity Report – Pacific / Indian Oceans
April 15, 2016

Tropical Cyclone 19S (Fantala) is active in the South Indian Ocean…located about 575 NM northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius

PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying rainfall accumulation over the last 3-hours…and tropical cyclone Positions and Segments, and Estimated Winds (TAOS Model) layers for Tropical Cyclone 19S

Tropical Cyclone 19S (Fantala) remains active in the South Indian Ocean…staying away from any islands or land at the time of this writing

Here’s a satellite image of this tropical cyclone, and a near real time wind profile (spinning clockwise in the southern hemisphere)…and what the computer models are showing

Here’s a NASA satellite image of this tropical cyclone, taken today. This NASA image showed rain falling at a rate of almost 12 inches per hour on the southwestern side!

Tropical cyclone 19S is located about 488 NM north-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), satellite imagery depicts tightly curved spiral cloud banding, wrapping into a 10 NM diameter cloud filled eye.

Images also show a small microwave eye, with the deepest thunderstorm activity running along the southern portion of the eyewall.

Currently, conditions are favorable for further intensification, with low 10 knot wind shear, warm sea surface temperatures…and robust poleward outflow.

TC Fantala is expected  to track generally west to west-northwest through 72 hours. Around the 72 hour point, the system is expected to turn back to the southeast for the remainder of the forecast period.

Given the favorable envirnoment, TC 19S is forecast  to intensify to a peak near 115 knots, although after the turn noted above, lower sea surface temperatures will prevail…as the system tracks back on itself.

As Fantala became the equivalent of a major hurricane, regional warnings were in effect for the Republic of Mauritius. A strong wind warning is in force for Rodrigues, Mauritius, St Brandon and Agalega in the Southern Indian Ocean.

Here’s a news report provided by the Seychelles Agency

Maximum sustained winds as of the JTWC Warning #8 were 100 knots with gusts of 125 knots

PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying rainfall accumulation over the last 3-hours…and a tropical disturbance with a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours

PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying rainfall accumulation over the last 3-hours…and a tropical disturbance with a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours

In addition, there’s an area of disturbed weather, being referred to as Invest 90P, circled in orange above…which has a medium chance of developing

This tropical disturbance was located about 240 NM northwest of Nadi, Fiji, here’s a satellite image…and a near real time wind profile – and what the computer models are showing

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), satellite imagery shows a broad low level circulation center, with fragmented cloud banding.

Upper level analysis indicates a marginally favorable environment, with moderate wind shear…offset by enhanced poleward outflow.

Global models indicate a generally southeastward track, toward Fiji…with gradual intensification.

Maximum sustained surface winds are estimated at 20-25 knots.

The potential for the development of a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours is medium
