Announcing the New Active Hazards API: Enhanced Insights for Better Decision-Making
We’re excited to announce a major update to our Data as a Service (DaaS) Active Hazards API, bringing even more powerful capabilities to organizations that rely on real-time hazard intelligence. This latest release introduces three significant enhancements designed to provide deeper spatial context, improved risk assessments, and more actionable insights.
New Features in the Active Hazards API
- GeoJSON Features for Enhanced Visualization
A new features property provides detailed GeoJSON representations of hazard-related geographic features. While not available for all hazard types, when present, this property delivers critical spatial information, such as the track of a tropical cyclone, enabling better visualization of a hazard’s movement and impact over time.
- Exposure Areas with Severity Ratings
The new exposureAreas property defines the specific geographic regions exposed to the hazard, categorized into three severity levels:
- 1 – Moderate Severity
- 2 – Strong Severity
- 3 – Severe Impact
- These severity-based exposure areas provide a structured, intuitive way to assess risks across different regions, helping decision-makers prioritize response efforts based on impact level.
- Comprehensive Exposure Assessment Reports
The new exposureAssessment property delivers detailed impact reports using the exposure areas’ geometry. These reports estimate the number of people affected, segmented by age group and vulnerability status, providing a granular view of the hazard’s potential impact. Additionally, the reports highlight critical infrastructure within exposure areas, such as hospitals and airports, offering crucial insights for emergency planning and resource allocation.
